If you are at a loss to know what to include in your camera gear then here are some suggestions.

These suggestions arise from the number of times Ihave been asked if I can recommend a good camera - lens combination for ......

So here are some ideas.

These suggestions are based on the firm belief that you choose the highest quality lens that you can afford, and then find the camera that will do what your style of photography requires.

One thing to remember from the outset is that once you have decided to choose a system that takes interchangeable lenses, rather than a camera with a fixed lens, you are likely to find yourself tied in to that brand (e.g. Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Sony, Leica, Panasonic) for a long time. It is very hard to decide to get rid of all your lenses in order to start again with another brand.

There is one redeeming fact, however, there are companies other than the brand you start with that make lenses for whichever camera model you choose.  For example, Sigma, Tamron, and Samyang make lenses which are the same optically but are designed to fit a selection of camera makes. So, for example, Sigma may make a 50mm f/2.8 lens but is supplied either to fit a Canon, Nikon, or Sony camera. This is great, because many of these lenses are as good as, and in some cases better than, the equivalent lens made by the company that made the camera.

So, with these thoughts in the background, I want to suggest a number of starting points that the beginner to photography might consider.

Decisions you have to make.

                            1. Do you require a camera with a lens that has a fixed focal length (no zooming)?

                            2. Do you require a camera with a built-in zoom lens?

                            3. Do you require a camera with interchangeable lenses?

                                     - if so, you will have to factor in the cost of those individual lenses.

(Remember, in making these suggestions I am starting with the quality of the lens first, and the functions provided by the body as a secondary consideration.)
